“Won’t Back Down” { A Movie Review}

Today’s post is a little different from what I’ve done in the past.

I recently was invited by The Circle of Moms to attend a screening of “Won’t Back Down,” a movie coming to theaters on Sept. 28.

One of the actresses in the movie was Viola Davis from “The Help.”  I was so excited because I loved her in that movie, and was anxious to see her again in this one.

I know a lot of my readers are mothers, and as a fellow mother I wanted to share this with you.  Even if you aren’t one, I think you’ll find it very moving and inspiring.

I guess the best way to describe the movie would be “Erin Brockovich” meets the public school system.

The movie is about two mothers. One is a public school teacher (Viola Davis) whose child has difficulty learning. The other is a single mother working two jobs (Maggie Gyllenhaal) who has a daughter who is dyslexic. Both children attend failing schools that cannot meet their needs. After exhausting all the options to get the necessary help for their children, the two mothers  decide the only option they have is to try to transform their children’s school. The unlikely pair band together–even though they come from entirely different backgrounds and circumstances–to fight for the best education for their children.

But the battle wasn’t easy. They faced teachers unwilling to put their jobs on the line, and a school board reluctant to upset the status quo.

This movie shows the determination of mothers who love their children and will fight tirelessly for them.

As a mother, I understood the driving force behind these women to Stand Up and Speak Out and Fight for something better.  I think it’s something all mothers can relate to. And even those who aren’t mothers. This movie inspires everyone to stand up for what they believe in, and never back down.

Wrapping It Up In Brown/ White Paper? You betcha!

Wrapping gifts this time of year is such a huge part of the season. We all love to receive packages that have been wrapped with love and thought.

There are so many options I thought we’d take another look at the ones I love.

These are fun because they use a simple brown box or craft paper and embellish.

Hope there is something here that will inspire you.

Rainbow colored yarn wrapped around the package and knotted,   jazzes up plain brown boxes.  Love it.

So simple with a big impact!

This is great option for the little ones on your list.

Again using a brown box or brown paper and enhancing it with colorful balloons tied in a cluster,  make this one so much fun.  What little one wouldn’t be excited to receive this?

Here, white butcher paper comes to life with some adorable ribbon and candy canes.

A white pom pom, candy cane and peppermint cluster make this come to life.  So sweet!

How about using fabric or paper flowers and ribbon to accent your package?  So unique and pretty, I think!

I love color and this one caught my eye right away.  Confetti dresses up the basic brown craft paper. Just a little glue stick and let the confetti fly. What do you think?

Finally, we’ll end with some more color.  Simple cardstock cut in strips wrapped around the box with a little ribbon  do the trick.  I also like the idea of colored take-out containers with a little ribbon.

Use your imagination  and whatever you have handy.  You just might surprise yourself!

Baby Banner

Since I’m on this Shabby Chic kick and a friend recently had a baby, I decided to make a banner for her since they are so popular now. I had quite a bit of burlap fabric laying around. On any given day you will find tons of fabrics in my workroom (another passion). I love how the rugged texture of the burlap contrasts with the softness of the beautiful blue satin ribbons that adorn each side of the banner. So, off I go cutting out triangles and lots of them. Before I knew it I had about forty cut. I was on a roll. I thought I’d show you the baby banner now and wait to show you what I’ve done with the rest of the triangles later. Since I love polka dots, I thought they’d be a perfect addition here.
