It’s technically still summer (the first day of autumn isn’t until September 22), but everyone seems to be in full fall mode. Case in point: Pumpkin spice everything hit grocery stores last month—August!
As much as I love watching the leaves change, sipping apple cider and cuddling on chilly nights, it’s always hard saying goodbye to summer. There’s something about those warm, carefree days that I just don’t want to lose.
If you’re having a hard time welcoming fall but don’t want to be the downer while everyone else is gleefully pulling their pumpkin decor out of storage, consider these transitional decorating ideas that—while they hint of fall, don’t quite take the plunge just yet. (Click the photos for sources!)
1. Put a twist on pumpkins.
Who said pumpkins have to be orange? Or carved like jack-o-lanterns? This melted cone will not only look cute on your porch, but help you slide into the new season.
2. Make your own sunshine.
Sunflowers can cheer up the gloomiest day, and they’re a great way to introduce warm, golden hues into your decor.
3. Create comfy spaces.
Don’t you just want to crawl into this bed with a good book and a mug of hot apple cider? These soft buffalo check pillows evoke warm, cozy feelings without screaming “fall!”
4. Light some lanterns.
Lanterns seem to transcend the seasons. We use them in summer, fall and winter, and they aren’t out of place in spring, either. Find some rustic, earth-toned ones to welcome the cooler days ahead.
5. Cozy up your campfire.
If you have a fire pit or outdoor fireplace, lay out some soft blankets and squishy pillows to keep you warm as you roast marshmallows on these cool nights.
